Sing Oxted! 11 April 2015: a brief reportIn bright spring sunshine, two dozen people assembled in the Concourse of Oxted’s United Reformed Church to enjoy singing from the Denson and Cooper editions of the Sacred Harp. Singers were exhorted to relax, take time to breathe between songs, sing as many verses as they wished, and repeat those songs which particularly moved them. A brief singing school for four new singers and a couple of recent converts helped them get an idea of what was going on, and gave them permission not to understand everything in one day. They all appeared to be enjoying themselves greatly and will surely be back for more. During the breaks and over lunch there was much chat and laughter and a lot of “getting to know you” going on, continued in the kitchen by the beverage and washing-up volunteers. The relaxed pace saw us sing 66 songs during the day; singing all or most of the verses was particularly well received, especially where the words tell a complete story. This has prompted some ideas for what might happen at the next Sing Oxted! - after all, it has a reputation to maintain for finding new ways to enjoy the music we love…… Full Minutes to follow. |
